“Prisoner”, 1912, Egon Schiele.
Schiele was put in jail for a few days in 1912, due to “violations of decency and morality” for painting nude teenage models at his house in the small town of Neulengbach. The art critic and first biographer of Schiele, Arthur Roessler, wrote about his overstated period in prison: “The passage of time and the death of the artist have created a sufficient distance for Schiele’s imprisonment to appear now as what it was from the start: a tragic blunder by an over-zealous moral police, and the grievous martyrdom of an artist who was misunderstood in his time”.
